Mackenzie Childs Style Table and Chairs

For a while now I have been admiring Terry’s Mackenzie Childs projects at Forever Decorating. She is great at pulling off the style! So,I have been trying to find a simple project to try to adapt to the Mackenzie Childs style. I finally found one and just completed this project today!

I am delighted with the outcome! Let’s take a look at the before shots.

chair before

When I stumbled across these chairs at Goodwill, the legs just screamed MC to me!

clamped chair

They were in good condition but slightly rickety so I did some gluing and clamping.

Now they are very sturdy.

The leather top table came from the Antique Tobacco Barn in Asheville. It was in good condition but the leather was damaged and the top and bottom were not screwed together.

Since I was painting the table anyway, the only thing I needed to do was attach the top to the base using 4 sturdy wood screws. Now on to the fun part!

painting the table

I gave everything 2 coats of Zinsser 123 primer followed by 2 coats of white paint. I used an accent color of Valspar Dark Mink on the outside edge then applied faux silver leaf to the wood trim that surrounds the leather insert. I used the same method that I used on my dining furniture here. The photo above is before the glaze.

The glaze makes all the difference in the world.

I absolutely love the base!!

Next I got to work adding some details to the chairs.

While I would have loved to use lots of color like the real MC, I chose to just use the Dark Mink thinking it would be a little more practical. Now let’s look at the glaze. It tones it down a lot.

glaze vs not glazed chairs

The chair on the right has been glazed and the one on the left has not been. Let’s take a closer look.

I recovered the cushions with some natural colored linen.

In the photo above you can also see the hardware on the table. I cleaned it but I did not polish it. I’m sure that it is solid brass but I wanted the dark color rather than shiny brass.

I love it when a project comes together!!

I have had a very busy week and hope to be posting about my experience at the Haven conference very soon. Meanwhile, I am getting ready for a red letter day tomorrow as my da ddy will complete his 30th radiation treatment for a recent bout with cancer! It has been a long and difficult road. Praising God from whom all blessings flow!

  2. Pat, that turned out beautiful. I bet that took many hours! Love it.

Hope your dad is doing well. My dad was just diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and began chemo last week. So far so good.

  3. I have so many things to say here. First, thank you for the shout out about me and my humble blog. I adore MacKenzie Childs and just can't see paying for something that I can do and enjoy so much more. Second, I think you did a fabulous job and I am so happy that I inspired you enough to give it a go since this set is so whimsical and charming. Third, I have never seen the strap that you used to hold the chair while it's glue sets. I want that so I will be going to the hardware store tomorrow to get me one! Thanks again and blessings to you and your Dad.

  6. It's beautiful! I am also a M.C. diyer - I love that you toned it down to be more practical - I feel you can not have too many brightly colored busy pieces in the same room - it would be too distracting - I'm going to try this version -great job!! I have also been inspired by Forever Decorating!!
